Math
Friends of Grace,
As part of my yearlong participation in the living school, I have been spending this week reading one passage of scripture and reflecting on it (Lectio Divina). I have been reading Luke 15, which could be entitled: Parables of the Lost- you know lost sheep, lost coins, lost sons. Click here to read Luke 15. Below you will find one of my reflections and prayers. I have been wondering about the math of this passage. Jesus demonstrates that it doesn’t matter if it’s 1/100, 1/10, or 1/2- the ratio doesn’t matter when it comes to God’s love and grace. Sometimes we might find ourselves in the majority, other times we are the one. Too often we find ourselves divided. Perhaps there is another way. I believe this to be true. PJM
A Reflection on Luke 15: Division
Divide it- the son asked. Divide your property. Divide your love. Divide your attention.
We want to be divided don’t we? We ask for it. Divide us! Divide it. Divide. Our world is divided into lost and found.
We want ratios that affirm that we are in the majority. We belong. We have done it right. After all, we didn’t wander off. We didn’t fall between the cracks. We didn’t leave and squander anything.
We stayed.
It was the lost one that made us divided. Not us. We were once complete at 100 until you made us 99 to 1. 9 to 1 and 2 to 1. You asked. It happened. And now we blame.
And yet, the division doesn’t matter. Who asked? Who divided? Who blamed? Our desire to come home is more important than previous requests. In the end, God will work to make us whole. A whole herd. A whole family. A whole person. A whole community. Not divided at all. Not divided anymore.
The party is for all. All are invited. All welcomed. God’s arms are open. Welcome home. Rejoice, celebrate the end to division.
God you remind us, that it doesn’t matter if we have wandered off and lost are way, or stayed by your side, we are invited to listen, to learn, to love. Help us to do this without division but in unity, peace and in wholeness. Recognizing the belovedness of one another. Amen

Belize
Friends of Grace,
Sunday, February 11th, I was able to preach my first international sermon while on mission trip in Belize. I mentioned to the congregation of Grace mission trippers and the Assemblies of God congregation in Maya Mopan that although I was excited for this opportunity, I was also nervous! I had never preached outside of the US, and I had never preached outside of a Lutheran Congregation. But it was my hope that through our work together that week and through our time spent in worship that we might – in the end- call each other friend!
This is true of both communities we serve in Belize. After just two years back to back in the same communities, relationships have grown and change is happening in Georgetown and Maya Mopan! My take aways from this trip are that if you are feeling any nudge (however big or small) to go on a mission trip, GO to Belize with Grace. There is something for everyone to do and such a wonderful experience of service and spiritual growth! The other take away is that even if you do not go to Belize, Grace as a congregation supports the projects we are doing in Belize, financially.
The two communities we serve are english speaking, poor and rural villages (shown circled in red on the map). But they are also vibrant and the people there are committed to improving and strengthening their communities but do not have the financial means to make it happen. This is where Grace has made a difference. We provided funding for continued work on the Georgetown clinic and began imagining with community leaders about starting conversations about Alcoholism and Mental Health. In Maya Mopan, we provided funding for a community shade structure in the school yard where children and community members can gather in the cool shade on hot Belizean days. Now when we are there, we work side by side with community members. And to be honest, the let us help even though at times it seems we are slowing them down! It was truly a wonder to see the folks in Maya Mopan pour concrete from wheel barrows. Through our work, side by side, and through Grace’s Transforming Inside and Out Tithe, we are making a difference in many lives in Belize! And as is always true on mission trips our lives are forever changed as well! I hope you enjoy these pictures from our trip. Ash Wednesday
Friends of Grace,
This Wednesday we kick off the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday Worship. We hope you will join us for this time of worship and reflection. We have Worship at both 1pm and 7pm which includes the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion.
Wednesday Night is our last pizza evening for a long time. Our kitchen is scheduled to go under construction starting on Thursday. We hope that you will join us for a time of food and fellowship. Pizza will be served beginning at 5:15pm, but we will have a second pizza order arriving at 6pm for anyone who wants to come later. The fellowship hall will be set up for you to enjoy a time of fellowship. The pizza is free. Please come and enjoy!
One of my favorite prayers is the prayer of Unknowing by Thomas Merton. I return to it again and again. It reminds me that our attempt to follow God is enough and that we don’t have to worry about doing it right, but trusting in God’s presence to lead the way. I hope that as we enter this time of Lent that these words speak to you too.
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end. nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road, though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always though
I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

Holding Down The Fort
Friends of Grace,
It’s been an interesting week at Grace Lutheran. Pastor Maria left Tuesday early in the morning for Belize (they all arrived safely!). Marie Kolar is out on medical leave since she slipped on the ice, and Tracie Russell, our church administrator had her appendix removed. David’s been away for a learning workshop in the afternoons and I am scheduled for my first colonoscopy on Friday so I will be out of the office on Thursday.
On the one hand, we are down to bare bones staff, on the other hand, it has been quiet enough for Kris Miller to turn on the radio for background noise (truthfully the construction project is providing plenty of noise, but the music is nice).
This isn’t the first time we have had a minimal staff here at Grace. In fact, if I have learned anything in my time here, it is not to panic, God will provide. And God has. We’ve had extra volunteers come in to help out, and because it’s been quiet enough, rooms are being packed up in preparation for our kitchen remodel. Others have called and asked “what can I do?”. Many have prayed for us as well.
I have an amazing staff. They work so hard and give so much of themselves. My hope and prayer is that everyone can take the time they need to rest and recuperate. If you notice we are a little slower at responding than usual please know we are busy holding down the fort (clearly (see photo above), and have faith that God will see us through. Please join me in praying for Tracie’s recovery and her family, for Marie’s recovery and her family, for safe travels for Pastor Marie and a good results from my procedure on Friday. It’s going to be a load of fun (haha).

Transitions
Friends of Grace,
Transitions continue to happen at Grace especially because of our building project. We are so thankful for all the support people have given and the flexibility as spaces change. I wanted to ask for your prayers for our communication specialist/bookkeeper Marie Kolar, who fell last week on the ice. Unfortunately, Marie had a bone in her back burst. We are praying for her pain relief, fast and effective recovery, for her husband Dave and whole family as they navigate physical therapy and everything else that goes along with a back injury. Because of the injury Marie will also be out of the office for a while. We are anticipating 4-6 weeks, but still not certain and it will all depend on how her recovery goes. In the meantime, any financial questions should go to Tracie Russell, our church administrator. You will also notice below that we are posting for two positions, a bookkeeper, and an administrative assistant. Even before Marie was hurt, we had planned to post the bookkeeper position. This is because the rumors are true, our beloved Kris Miller will be retiring at the end of May. In an effort to fill Kris’s position and start training, we have been reorganizing our team and Marie will be taking over some of Kris’s job, including volunteer coordination and organization and stepping down from her bookkeeper job. However, while we had planned to wait a little longer for an administrative assistant, given everything going on we decided to post both jobs at this time. We recognize this will give us time to find the right person as well as have adequate time for Kris to share her wisdom.
Kris Miller will have worked at Grace for 28 years in June. She is beloved by our staff and our congregation. She is also ready to enjoy more time at the cabin and with her grandkids and husband. We will miss her greatly; however she assures me she’s not going to disappear. Thanks be to God. We will be celebrating Kris the last Sunday in April, and our currently organizing a team to plan this event. Nancy Jenkins has volunteered to head up this extravaganza. Voting Members for Synod Assembly
Our congregational meeting that happens on February 4th has two main components. First is voting on our 2024 budget, a very important part of our life together. The second is to elect voting members for our Synod Assembly. More details are provided below.
The Synod Assembly is where we do the work of the greater church. If you have ever been curious about what is happening with other Lutheran Church in our area, this is a great time to connect with other Lutherans and also to learn. But more importantly this year is a bishops election. A bishop’s election only happens every 6 years. Since our Bishop Ann Svennugsen has just completed her second term, we will be electing a new bishop. It is an exciting time to be the church and to be a part of the wider church body.
In February, we will gather at Conference assemblies (see below for details) where nominations can be put forth. After this event, nominees have a chance to withdraw their names, or go forward. Then we will have the opportunity to meet nominees and hear their hopes and dreams for the church moving forward.
Finally, in May we will gather and together we will worship, and pray and vote for a new Bishop for our synod. It usually takes a few ballots, lots of good discussion and is a great opportunity to get involved.
Both Pastor Maria and I will be in attendance. We also get to bring 3 adult voting members and 1 youth voting member. If you are interested in attending, please contact me as soon as you can. We do need to have names as soon as possible.

Financials, Budgets, Oh My! And a Story of Grace
We started 2023 with a stretch budget. We knew that our budgeted income might be a high and yet, we moved forward in faith, trusting in God’s abundance and generosity to lead the way. 2023 was our first year, since the pandemic without a governmental grant supplementing our income. Nevertheless, we ended the year strong and we are so, so grateful. Because of the mindful stewardship of our staff, our expenses stayed low. Because of your generosity and support, our income was steady. We were able to put additional money into capital savings for our building project, as well as fulfill our benevolence promises. Thank you!
Last night at our Vision Board meeting, the Board approved the 2024 budget that we will vote on at the Congregational meeting on February 4th. If your eyes glaze over at the thought of a budget, you are not alone. The good news is we have a terrific financial team who has worked and looked over all the components of the budget as well as the faithful work of our church administrator, Tracie Russell. I want you to know that we welcome your questions on the budget.
I will confess that at times, I worry. I spend time looking at numbers and the amount of money we have, and also at the expenses of running a vibrant church like Grace along with the building project. There are times that I get overwhelmed. But over and over again, I have learned to trust in God’s provision. God has given us the right people to lead this church both on staff and on our Vision Board and in other significant positions. God continues to inspire, and generously provide. Thank you for the love, support, faithfulness and generosity that you provide at Grace, it has made a difference and allowed the important work of Grace to happen.
One quick story before I conclude: I was able recently to give a financial gift to a young person who has had a hard life and was struggling financially. She kept hugging and crying as I gave her the check telling me that this is the first time that she has felt cared for like this. She has never experienced compassion and people willing to give and help. I repeatedly told that I was just the messenger, that it is the people of Grace who made this possible. She stated: I’ve never been in a place like this. This my friends is the glimpse of God’s kingdom coming to light in our world, generous love that allows God’s light and God’s provision to come through. Thanks be to God, it is always about more than numbers. It is about faithfulness and love transforming hearts, and lives.

Moving
Things are moving at Grace Lutheran Church. Construction is underway, our programming is up and running once again after winter break, and every day I walk into the building and I am informed of a next step in construction. This next step usually means that we need to move things- clear out the mechanical room, get ready for our toddler room and nursery to be no longer accessible. As much as it’s a bit of a pain, I will confess that I kind of like it. It’s a little bit like solving a daily puzzle. Where can we put this stuff, what can be thrown away. It has definitely forced us to clean house and prioritize.
In many ways, I think opportunities like this are good for the soul and also for someone’s environment. Just yesterday we found multiple “bad remotes” from 2012. They haven’t been touched or used in over 10 years, it’s time to throw them out. I wonder, how often we take the time to look into the dark places of our life, be it our real closets or basements, or the forgotten places in our soul. what might we clean out in order to start fresh and new. Are there things that you have been holding onto too long that are bad for you? Could you let them go, lighten your load a little bit, and give space for something new?
I do ask for your patience and flexibility as we move forward. We are losing some of our large group spaces in the near future as the daycare spaces are taken away. Remember this is all temporary and the end result is that we will have better space in the future. In the meantime, I give thanks for all who have helped move and discard old items, as well as everyone who has had to find new ways to share and use the space here at Grace. Thanks for moving into the future with us!

It Takes A Village
It has been a busy week at Grace Lutheran Church. Not only have we just finished the Christmas Season and are in the process of putting everything away, but we are hosting the funeral for Major Jeffrey Hoernemann today. It is such a tragic loss and a privilege to be able to provide care and hospitality to his family and friends. It is also a big undertaking especially now that our building project is underway.
And yet, I am so moved by the people who keep showing up. The hard work of our volunteers and our staff is remarkable. People of all ages have helped from rolling silverware, to taking down trees, to setting up tables, to providing bars and being willing to usher or help in the parking lot. I am so grateful for all of the people who have given time; sharing both their problem solving skills along with muscle power to get ready for today.
When I think about what the church looks like in it’s best moments- it is this: working alongside one another in faith and love; holding each other in comfort and compassion, all the while reminding one another of God’s promises and God’s presence.
Thank you for being church together. It truly takes a village for this community to do the work God has called and invited us to do!

With us!
We are just days away from Christmas. Days away from singing Silent Night and shouting Joy to the World. On Christmas we celebrate the incarnation, God becoming human and living with us, knowing what it is like to feel pain, sorrow, fear, joy, love, comfort and more.
At times in my life knowing God is with me, doesn’t feel like that much. I want something more. I want God to create change. I want God to heal. I want God to bring peace. And while my own desires for what I want God to do are legitimate, it also strips away the power of what God with us really means.
When I think about the hardest days of my life- when my baby went into surgery at 3 days old, my parents sitting with Jeff and me made all the difference. When my mom died, my sister and dad crying with me, helped me know I was not alone. When I am anxious and afraid, telling a friend who will just hold that truth and not try to take it away, help me to move forward.
God with us is powerful. This accompaniment is a gift given to our world in great love, that even in the darkest night, even in the hardest of days, God will not, does not abandon you or me, God is indeed with us. Thanks be to God!

Finally!
I am so excited to share the good news with you that we finally have the permits to begin our building project. We met with our project manager and building site supervisor on Wednesday morning. New construction is set to begin on Monday, December 18th. Thanks be to God! The good news of a warm fall is that the ground has not yet frozen and so we will still be able to dig. The first area of focus will be the addition on the daycare wing. Hopefully in early January we will begin the new entrance as well.
Our staff spent some time a few weeks ago thinking about how to navigate through the construction. We recognized that we will need good communication about what is going on as well as grace for space. What this means is that rooms are going to be disrupted and the way it has always been won’t be able to happen. We will do our best to give you lead time if your room is going to be unavailable and we will work with you in finding a new area for your group to work. However, we also have to work alongside our childcare center and the various regulations that they have. We hope to do this well, but know there will be mistakes. We hope we will can work to be flexible and gracious with one another during the disruptions.
I hope you will join me in praying for this project and for our construction crews and all who are involved. I am so thankful for the hard work of our building task force, and want to specifically thank Tracie Russell and Greg Ackerson for all of their hard work as co-chairs on our Transforming appeal as well as their ongoing leadership in organizing and planning for the project! They are tremendous leaders and we are blessed to have them at Grace.

Sharing Our Stories of Gratitude
Pastor Maria declared: “I’m anxious about tomorrow night,” at staff meeting yesterday. Seeking to understand I questioned: “Because you don’t think anyone will share? Are you worried it’s going to be awkward?” She shook her head. “I’m not sure what I want to bring. I feel a lot of pressure!”
In truth, I hadn’t decided what to bring either. Even though the invitation to bring an item as an offering of your “first fruits” (or just an item to represent something you are grateful for this year) for our Thanksgiving worship was my idea, I didn’t have an idea in mind for my own sharing. It wasn’t until about 10 minutes ago, this morning (Wednesday) that I decided what I am going to share tonight. I am excited to both share my story and hear yours.
This offering of gratitude is not intended to be an event where anyone has the best story or item to bring, but instead an invitation to hold space for God’s abundance, God’s generosity and the blessings of the year to be lifted up in praise. I hope you will join us in sharing stories and giving thanks tonight in worship.
Also, come at 5:30pm for pizza, stay for bible study at 6pm and worship and share stories at 7pm and then connect with new friends and old over some delicious pie. I can’t wait to see you tonight!

Thanksgiving Eve Worship
A theme in the bible is sharing your first fruits. In many ways this is where the concept of the tithe comes from. Before we spend or eat anything the people would give the best 10% to God as an offering of thanksgiving. Our culture has not been the best at continuing to follow this tradition. However, it is a good spiritual practice and an acknowledgment that nothing is mine, everything I have is a gift from God, therefore I give thanks.
On November 22nd, we will be gathering for Thanksgiving Eve at Grace at 7pm for worship and pie. We will be reading Deuteronomy 26, in which the Israelites are commanded by God to offer their first fruits in thanksgiving for all that God has done. While not many of us are taking part in a traditional harvest, we do have stories of thanksgiving to share. I would like to invite you to bring an item to place on the altar or in our chancel space (the area around the altar). For the sermon, we will be sharing why we brought our items and what they mean, while giving thanks to God. Yes, it’s an interactive sermon. I hope you will still come and more importantly participate. This worship is intended to be a time of giving thanks to God and I think we can do that best when many voices are raised up allowing us to see God in unique ways. There are not limitations on what you bring. It does not have to fit into the category of “first fruits” per se, but instead a representation of a way that you have felt God’s presence. If you want to participate and hate to speak, please write out the story and one of us will read it in your place.

Thanksgiving for Staff
Dear Grace Friends,
I wanted to let you know about a few staff transitions. Frances Fernandez who has served as our Church Administrator and more recently part-time Human Resources and Payroll has submitted her letter of resignation. Frances has been working full-time this fall at the University of Minnesota, and has found that balancing this work, and the work at Grace is too much. Her last day will be November 15th and we will be giving thanks for her work and ministry at Grace sometime soon. Thankfully, Frances is not leaving our community at Grace and will continue to serve as a worship leader and in other volunteer positions. I am immensely grateful for Frances. She is a truly dedicated person, whose faithfulness is inspirational. She supported us all through COVID and continued to serve Grace even when her daughter Samantha went through kidney failure and a transplant. She helped us get grants, ensured we got the employee retention credit and led us through our database transition to Realm and much more. I am so grateful for her! I am in no way surprised that the University of Minnesota wanted to keep and expand Frances role with them. She’s an incredible asset. I wish her all the best and will miss her on our team.
I am also very excited to welcome Aaron VanDanacker to our staff. Aaron is our new Organist and Accompanist. Aaron works for Stillwater schools and has an extensive background in worship leadership at different churches. He is a gifted musician and organist and we are immensely blessed to have him join our team. I hope that you will take time and introduce yourself to Aaron and welcome him to Grace.
In this month of Thanksgiving, I give thanks to God for the wonderful gift of Frances and all that she gave and shared with Grace and give thanks for this new opportunity with Aaron. May God bless them and all of us as we move forward together in faith.

Food for Thought
Dear Grace Friends,
Happy November! We have turned the page on our calendar and are in the final stretch of 2023. What a year it has been. November is a big month in my family. Both of my girls will celebrate birthdays and then we have the added bonus of Helena coming home for Thanksgiving.
In this month of giving thanks, I want to highlight all of the things Grace Lutheran will do throughout the Holiday Season. We will serve food at Family Table and provide extra Thanksgiving groceries as well as a grocery gift card. Turkeys will be collected and given out to families. Wish lists for Sand Creek families, and Stepping Stones are being created and we will also be extending an invitation to any Grace families who need a little extra love this Christmas to sign up in Gifts of Grace. I am in awe of all of the ways we have to serve and care for others. I am also a little overwhelmed. My hope is that you find something touches your heart and do that. You do not have to do everything.
One of the things I hope you will do is join Grace Lutheran for our November packing event at Feed my Starving Children (register here). While yes, this is another way to serve, it is also a great community event. In packing food together, we will be able to share stories and make new friends. I am hoping that we fill the packing room at Feed My Starving Children. I am ready to get my hair net on. I hope you are too!

Beyond Grateful
Dear Grace Friends,
I wanted to share some inspirational numbers with you. The video above gives an update on our Transforming Inside and Out generosity appeal through August 30th.
Our midway point gave us the opportunity to invite new people to join us in praying, and supporting this campaign both in spirit and in finances. We are so grateful for the generous commitment of this congregation in leading us into the future.
Here are the results of our “Come and See What It’s All About: Transforming Inside and Out” event:
- 14 new pledging families for a total of $21,836.00
- 14 families increased their pledges for a total of $19,980.00
- Grand total increase in pledged amount = $41,816.00
New Total Transforming Commitments = $1,571,804.00
Total gifts received as of October 18th, 2023 : $862,046.50 over 54%.

Thanksgiving and First Fruits
Dear Grace Friends,
I am so grateful for all of you! We have had a busy fall filled with so many wonderful things. From connecting on Rally Sunday, to serving together at God’s Work. Our Hands, to celebrating generosity last week at our event last Tuesday night. We are living into our mission and values. I am so grateful for our amazing volunteers who give so much of themselves and their time to make Grace the place it is in which we get to live, learn, and explore our faith.
We are so grateful for so many of you affirming your commitment to our Transforming Inside and Out Generosity Appeal. If you have not had a chance to do this, there is still time. It helps us be faithful to our budget and work within our means. I am also so grateful for the people who have joined our appeal by making a new promise. This Sunday is designated to be First Fruits Sunday. It is an invitation to bring your Transforming gift for the year, or to bring as much as you can. I recognize that some of you have regular online giving set-up and so this might feel a little funny. I will also admit, that I am one of these people. My own commitment is given monthly, so while I am celebrating first fruits, I will continue to give as I regularly do, as part of my spiritual practice.
We know that generosity comes in many forms: in time, in talent, and in sharing: sharing your faith, sharing your story, and sharing financially. Thank you for your generous hearts and spirits and for sharing your first fruits with God and at Grace.

Transforming Inside and Out
We are at the half-way point of our generosity journey in our capital appeal. I have been so moved and inspired by the faithful generosity of so many. Next week is our Come and See what it’s all about, Transforming Inside and Out celebratory event on Tuesday October 3rd from 6-7:30pm at Grace. We have extended the RSVP deadline to Sunday in hopes that you will join us.

Prayer Walk
Pastor Maria and the Faith Practices and Neighboring Practices led the Vision Board in a prayer walk yesterday evening. We essentially walked around the perimeter of the church with open eyes, open ears, to see what God is up to in our neighborhood. We were invited to stop along the way, as we felt nudged to do so and when we stopped we would pray. I will confess I wasn’t sure how this would go. Don’t get me wrong, I completely trust Pastor Maria’s leadership, but I’ve never done this before and why was I suddenly going to feel nudged to stop as I walked in a space that I drove through every day.
Surprisingly, I felt nudged to stop a number of times. In fact, I saw the neighborhood a little differently than I have before. As we stopped and looked over at the strip malls across the street, we talked about the students who attended the Anoka Hennepin Schools, prayed for them, and their teachers. We noticed the way that Margie’s has brought some new life and a place of connection for people, recognized the intersections that were both busy and those that were quiet. In this, we prayed for people zooming past, and those whose life seemed quiet and yet, we were aware of our own members, as well as neighbors living nearby who had overcome trauma from house fires, health concerns, and more.
As we conversed over dinner, our teams made note that the prayer walk was different than we expected, and wondered about transferring this practice to our own neighborhoods. What would happen if we slowed down for a moment- to look and reflect on the ways our neighborhoods have changed throughout the years, the movement of our neighbors, and recognized God’s presence in it all. Perhaps this week as you move in a place that is familiar, you might join us in moving a little slower and paying attention to where God is already at work. Might you pray for those seen and unseen that they might feel God’s love and presence.

God’s Work. Our Hands.
This Sunday is God’s Work. Our Hands. It’s a very different day of worship together. For the past few years, we have changed our worship schedule to just one worship together and then immediately following we move out into the community to do service projects. It’s one of my favorite Sundays of the year. I love worshipping all together. It’s fun to see people trying to figure out where to sit when their typical pew is taken by someone who sits in the same spot at a different service. It’s also such a great day of connection with each other and hopefully with our neighbor.
At the same time, I am always a little stressed on this Sunday. Largely because we will have people come to worship late, dressed up for worship and not at all ready to get their hands dirty. I hate making people feel like they have made a mistake, or that they don’t belong. I hope that you will join us for this Sunday of Worship and Service. I also hope you will get out of your comfort zone, and introduce yourself to someone new, as you work together, could you dare to share the truth of yourself, and what is really happening in your life? If you see someone out of place, might you welcome them in. At the very hearts of what we are doing each Sunday is being a place of grace. A place where people can come as they are and feel welcomed and cared for. I am grateful for all of you and the ways you allow God’s presence to be known through your smile, your presence and your willingness to invite others in. Also, if you know someone who never pays attention to changes in dates or times for worship, please reach out and remind them that Worship is at 9am and our service projects begin at 10am!

First and Last Days
My social media feeds are filled with photos of first day of school photos. I find particular delight in seeing kids from previous congregations who have grown up. When I left they were just starting kindergarten and now some are graduating from high school and others are entering 4th grade. I am convinced that they are growing up, while I am staying the same age. Right?!
Simultaneously, my grandmother-in-law died this past Sunday evening. Betty Oare, Jeff’s maternal grandma turned 95 mid August. It’s been 16 years since she buried her husband Gordy. I remember because I was pregnant with my daughter Lily at the time. Betty was a powerhouse of a woman. Grandma to everyone but literally mother to 7 children and 19 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. I became an extra granddaughter when Jeff and I were dating because even though I tried to call her by her first name or Mrs. Oare, she only responded to Grandma. She worked until she was in her 70s. She dug holes, mowed her own grass, and kept the house spotless. Eventually memory loss took her away from us and we began the long goodbye. Her daughters and son visited often and many of the grandkids did too. It’s been a few years since she has known our family and even Jeff, her first-grandkid. Nevertheless, as I reflect today, I am so grateful to have been included in Betty’s family, for the love and care she showed us. Even when there was hardly any floor space in her house for the Christmas gatherings, there was always room for another person in her heart and in her family. I give thanks that today, Betty is at home in kingdom of God reunited with the loved of her life, and fully connected to God.
It strikes me as true that often the first and the last go together. In the midst of birth there is death, in the midst of goodbyes there are hellos. On any given day many of us are encountering both the beginning and end. Our faith tells us that God is in it it all. God is the beginning and the end, the alpha and the omega and we are part of this eternal family. I don’t know what is starting or ending for you today, but my prayer is that you feel the love and strength of God in whatever you are going through.

Ready, Set, Go!
The last 24 hours I have been distracted by a marathon relay swim going on from Split Rock to Duluth Minnesota. My friend Kris is an observer on the sailboat and sending us frequent updates about what is happening. Karen Zemlin, the woman in this photo, is the organizer and one of the swimmers for this tremendous team. At 8am, Karen set off into the water, and began a swim relay to raise awareness about climate change and also take on another challenging swim. I swim with Karen, well near her. She’s in lane 5 (the fast lane) and I’m in lane 2 (much slower). But we have become friends over the years although on occasion she will tell me less lip and more flip (in other words stop talking and get swimming). Each swimmer in this relay swims for one hour before switching off. The swim itself is remarkable but what is even more amazing is that they are able to do it without wetsuits. This is great for swimming, but not good news about the temperature of our lakes and our planet. If you want to watch the news segment click here.
Karen has been thinking about this relay and planning for this event for years. I only learned about it this past May and it’s been a delight to have been part of the journey. It’s been even more fun to have a friend on deck. I often think when it comes to swimming the hardest part for me is just getting in the water. It’s uncomfortable at first. It takes effort and motivation, but once I’m in, I feel so good. I may get tired with my swim workout but I am always glad I went.
I wonder, if this might be true for church. That often the hardest part is just getting yourself there. If it’s waking up on time Sunday morning, or signing up for an event that you have thought about going to. It takes motivation and a willingness to get out of your comfort zone. As we round the corner to fall, and enter into the closing weekend of summer, I am hoping that you all will join me in worshiping with us in the next few weeks. Trying something new. If you haven’t participated in God’s Work. Our Hands. join us on September 17th for worship at 9am and outreach projects starting at 10am. Come and join a bible study, or volunteer to help out with some of children and youth ministry. I want you to know there is place for you here at Grace and want you to join us. I know my staff has been planning for a while now, and we are getting close to the starting line. I hope you’ll participate, meet new people and find your faith strengthened just by showing up.

Reclaiming Conversation
People of Grace,
I recently started reading a book called, “Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age” by Sherry Turkle. This was a book given to me by a member of Grace over a year ago and I just started reading it, and I am so sad it has taken me this long because so far (I haven’t finished it yet). I think Turkle’s message is crucial to our life together. Turkle is making a case for face-to-face conversations. That in this digital age children are craving attention from parents on screens, work is done via email in the name of efficiency, and conversations have turned in to monologue rants online to friends who will agree with us. And although technology is wonderful, “when we turn to our devices instead of to one another, the cost is high: a loss of empathy.” Turkle after years of research suggests face-to-face conversations are the antidote and will bring more empathy, compassion, and creativity in our every expanding and complex world.
Maybe this rings true for you as it does for me. When I need to have a tough conversation, I prefer to have that conversation in person. But sometimes it just feels easier not to have the conversation at all. My favorite moments at work this summer have been eating lunch together as a staff, sharing about our lives and ministry. But sometimes there isn’t time and I eat my lunch alone in my office while reading emails. I have also realized when I have my computer up in a meeting, I can easily get distracted by what is on the screen and try to multi-task, in the name of efficiency. This doesn’t help me stay engaged as a conversation partner and it certainly doesn’t help me listen.
When you think about it, Jesus ministry was often a ministry of conversations. Face-to -face conversations. Conversations along the journey of life. Conversations with friends, family, followers, and foreigners. I wonder how having the difficult conversation, putting my computer or phone away, having lunch with others might change how we live and love and serve together. I wonder how you might make intentional face-to-face conversations a part of your life, family, work, and ministry? I wonder what differences we will notice? I wonder what we will hear when we are really listening?
Below you will read about many of the things happening at Grace including Circle of Grace, a ministry team who, among some other things is committed to visitation, just another name for communion and conversation. I am grateful for those who are a part of this active ministry at Grace!

Fall Registrations are OPEN!!!
People of Grace,
I am so excited to share that Fall Registrations are open for a number of our faith formation offerings at Grace! There are a number of new opportunities as well! I hope you received your Grace Notes Newsletter in the mail (you can also pick one up at church if you aren’t yet on our mailing list).
Our hope for faith formation at Grace is that there is something for everyone to learn and grow in their faith. Whether you are participating as a student or leading as a volunteer, we pray through our programming that all will grow in their relationship with God! We also hope that our children and youth are integrated into groups of adults and visa versa. Intergenerational relationships are integral to my understanding of faith. My perspective has been changed learning from the youngest in our congregation, and my eyes have been opened by our senior learners as well. Those of you who are registering your children will notice some changes especially to Sunday School. We are asking that parents or guardians volunteer in Sunday School. We know parents are the number one teachers of life and of everything and we want you to feel like you have the tools to do this well! By joining in Sunday School twice a year you will know what your kids are learning and we hope integrate faith at home! This also allows our kids to have and know many adults who care for them and give them examples of what a life of faith looks like!
There is a place for you to learn and grow in faith at Grace. Check out a few of the registrations below and if you don’t see something for you, stop by or give me a call and we will find something that will work for you! Adult offerings don’t require registrations but know that we have faith formation opportunities for you too! And if you would like to volunteer with our Children or Youth we have two informational and training sessions: Sunday, August 27th 12-2pm or August 30th 6-8pm. You need only attend one. Lastly, we want to keep everyone safe, our children and our adults! Everyone working in Children, Youth, and family ministries needs an active background check and to attend a training.

Perspective
This is my small group from our mission trip last week. In the front is Jeff, Barbara and Railin (pronounced RayLynn). We are standing in their “She Shed,” which is made entirely of found garbage and recycled material. There house has been under construction for two summers. Having the walls, and floor replaced. We were the final team to complete the work this summer, putting on trim and covering outlets and putting the furniture back. And yet, even though they have new flooring and new drywall in their living room and Railin’s bedroom, there is still work to be done. Most likely, they will have another summer with ASP (Appalachian Service Project), in which crews will remove walls that have rotted out and replace them for a longer more sustainable future.
Jeff, the homeowner, celebrated his 62 birthday on Monday. He had stories that would fill his house with laughter and entertain for hours. As an over-the-road truck driver, an EMS employee and a staff member of a funeral home, Jeff always managed to shock us a bit with his stories and also give us a glimpse of the depth of his experience in a humble and loving manner. His quick wit, and fun loving cantor made him a favorite to all of us. Barbara was quick to praise us, and also just as sharp as her husband ready to add to the humor, and Railin won all of our hearts as she led us in dance lessons and applied make-up to the girls on our crew. When it came time to say goodbye, we weren’t ready. This family in just a few short days had taken up space in our hearts. I know I wanted more time with them. Jeff repeatedly told us- “If you are ever here again, you ALWAYS have a place to stay in our home. You all are family now.” He said this with a shimmer in his eye and sincerity in his heart and we knew he meant it. My natural instinct caused me to silently wonder where? Their house was not in great shape and needed more work. But I know it was a truthful invitation, we would always be welcomed in their home, in fact, anyone would be. They would give up any space they had to welcome others in.
Too often, I live under the misconception that we need a big enough house, or enough room to open up our homes to others. I can at times fall into the spirit of scarcity instead of abundance. This is one of the virtues of trips like this, my perspective is changed. My eyes are opened. My heart is transformed, and suddenly I see more clearly, all that God has given me. It’s never been about the right type of house, or adequate amount of space, it is about seeing the gifts given, seeing the people God has given me to love, and being willing to let everyone in because their is space not only in my heart, but in my home and in our church for all. Thanks be to God!

Christikon
If you missed worshiping with us last weekend, here are the pictures I shared with the congregation! These are pictures from the High School Trip to Christikon Camp in Montana. It was a wonderful week. Our youth are really exceptional. Throughout our week backpacking we experienced many ups and downs. Our hikes were challenging especially when you add a pack that is 1/4 of your body weight. We tested the limits of being together for so long. We also studied the Bible each day, we looked at different parables and wondered just what does God’s story have to do with our own. We peaked two different mountains Baboon and Independence.
Baboon was 10,600+ feet above sea level. Independence was much smaller but the chance to hike at sunset and worship God together with those amazing views will be a memory that lasts a long time. I am also grateful to Will Weikle our new CYF Director. It was so fun to have him along on this trip and begin to build relationships with the High School youth at Grace! I can tell you he is eager to continue this work! I am also grateful to Michele Behnke-Nead who came as an adult chaperone. We cannot do these trips with out supportive adults like Michele.
Pastor Joanna is on another trip with our high school youth this week. If you are on Facebook, you can follow Grace Lutheran Church and see some of the images and stories of their trip! There are 7 adult leaders traveling with those youth as well! We cannot offering life changing experiences to our youth without your congregational support! Thank you for investing in our kids through your support of Grace ministry operations.
It’s funny to think summer is almost over and fall is on the horizon. But it’s true! This week the office has been busy preparing our Fall Preview GraceNotes and many of our Fall Programming registrations are now LIVE on Realm. Outside of Time
Two of the clocks in my house aren’t working and I have a family calendar that hasn’t been updated since August of last year. I have gotten used to relying on my phone calendar and phone clock, but I have realized that there are some aspects of my life that just seem to be outside of time. I actually do not mind that I’m not up-to-date on all of the stuff because it frees me to just be when I am at home. Maybe I don’t always need to be focused on an agenda or a schedule. Maybe I can just be absorbed in a book, or a show or even a conversation and not worry about what comes next.
When it comes to faith, God invites us to embrace each moment that we are given, to live in the day and to not worry about tomorrow for today has enough worries. But I wonder, if there is some element of living outside of time that frees us to let go. As someone who values an agenda, I am mindful that God works in wilderness wanderings, and in long meals, and sleepless nights. That God often shows up at an unexpected time and not on schedule. Perhaps, I miss being awakened to God’s presence when I am too focused on what is next, or my calendar and agenda.
The last few years have taught me this balance, or both obligation and letting go. It all began in COVID, but continues now as we move into our building project. There has been a lot of hurry up and wait. We are in the midst of waiting right now, waiting to start, waiting for final plans, waiting for permits, waiting for the schedule. But even as we wait, I know that God will be present in the day and invites all of us to keep our eyes, ears and hearts open to God showing up in God’s own time.

Summer Is Flying By!
I announced at our staff meeting this week… SUMMER IS OVER!!!!! This of course isn’t true. We are halfway through summer. But in all honesty, summer is flying by and fall is right around the corner. There is always so much happening in the church behind the scenes to prepare for Fall and our kick off to the program year. And this year is no different. It was so exciting to welcome to staff this week, our new Child, Youth, and Family director, Will Weikle and begin to imagine what fall programming will look like. Our next Grace Notes (snail mail mailer) will be delivered mid August and will include our Fall Preview! August 1st is the deadline for publication so if you are a ministry leader and wish to have your event or program in that mailer make sure to get it into Marie Kolar by August 1st.
Not only is fall right around the corner but there is so much to look forward to at Grace for the rest of the summer: Will Weikle, Michele Behnke-Nead and I will embark with nine high school youth to Christikon on Friday. While we are gone Pastor Joanna will take some of our middle schoolers to Gustavus Adolfus for Summer festival Camp. On July 28th Pastor Joanna and six adult leaders leave with another group of high schoolers for a mission trip to the Appalachian mountains. Not to mention Summer Stretch every Thursday, two food truck nights (Wednesday July 26th and August 9th), Clifford movie night for children (August 4th) and The Saints game Tuesday, July 25th! And this is all in addition to serving our community through the food shelf, worship, Hope4Youth and so much more! We hope that you will attend some of these events and get involved with all that is happening around here! I continue to be amazed at how God’s generosity, love and grace flow through you! Thank you for living life together, for sharing God’s light here and in the community!

Summer Stretch
While in Seminary, I was the Children’s Ministry Director at Christ Church in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis. This congregation was very traditional and would teach its children the circle of the church year. Check out the circle image for details. It really is a wonderful way of experiencing God’s story. As you can see the Summer months are green and labeled as Ordinary Time. That isn’t my favorite description. I like to call these days, the GREEN GROWING DAYS! Here in Minnesota in the summer months lots of growing is happening. Despite the drought, I am told corn was knee-high by the fourth of July! Our kids do a lot of growing in the summer too. Physically and spiritually! Here are Grace, we are fortunate to have inherited the Summer Stretch program for our middle schoolers. Summer Stretch is a dynamic ministry opportunity for our youth to stretch their faith, friendships, and call to serve in our community! So far, our youth have served in various ways at Rise Incorporated and Springbrook Nature Center. And they have learned new skills at Average Joe’s Archery and enjoyed the art at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden! There are many more service sites and adventures remaining for the rest of summer. They will serve at Feed My Starving Children, Second Harvest Heartland, Global Health Ministries, and Hope4Youth. They will go to CheapSkate, Urban Air, Bunker Beach, and Valley Fair. As well as participate in a Bible Study called Sent Together where we are looking to stories in the Bible where characters are sent to serve in God’s name! Together we wonder if and how God is calling us to be Sent Together to serve. Dave Kolar is our head chaperone and each week returns after a day with our youth and says they are the best group of kids he has worked with! Check out some of the images from Summer Stretch so far! I am grateful for our high school junior leaders who are helping us this summer and those high schoolers who will join us for Christikon and Appalachia Service Project trips later in July! God is stretching us in these green growing days! Not just our youth either! How is God working, moving, and stretching you this summer?

It’s Finally Happening…Well Soon…
The last few weeks have been productive in moving our building project forward. We received the rebid dollar amount with the revised plans from Donlar (our CMAR). They came in at $3.11 million, which is approximately where we were aiming. Our building task force unanimously recommended to move ahead with the project at this amount, and sent the vote to Vision Board, who also unanimously voted in favor of moving ahead.
Tracie Russell, our rock star Church Administrator, sent out the mortgage application this week and we were approved. Everything is moving in the right direction. It’s about time! We have had teams work tirelessly in order to make sure that our project meets our needs, and is within our budget. It has not been easy with rising interest rates, and the increased cost of raw materials. Nevertheless, we move forward in faith.
I want to thank you all for your faithfulness. You have prayed and joined in conversations about this project. You also have financially supported the project. As we have waited to move ahead, the money that has been given, has been in a money market account earning interest.
I want you to know that we were able to retain a good portion of our project. The sanctuary will be renovated to improve sound and lighting, the narthex will get a facelift as well. We will get updated ADA bathrooms, widened hallways, a new entrance and new main office, and a secure daycare. Our kitchen will be expanded and updated and have TWO SINKS and two work stations. While we did not keep our gender-neutral bathroom in the space we initially hoped for (the food shelf is now there), I want you to know that there are two gender neutral bathrooms in the preschool rooms and toddler rooms. These will be for anyone who needs a gender neutral or family friendly bathroom. We will be working on signage and communication so they are easy to find.
Once again, I give thanks for all of you. For your faithfulness, for your generosity and for all the ways that you are beacons of God’s light and love in the world.

A Community of Faith
One of my good friends called me as I was walking out the door on Tuesday morning. Her mother died this past April, and together we shared about our experience of loss as well as our new relationship with our dads. Some of the unexpected discoveries we have had in our own journey of grief. As we talked, I shared about things happening in the life of Grace. I told her, “A lot of people are going through really difficult things right now. It’s so hard! and…I have been awed by the incredible love and care our community has for each other.” I am so thankful and privileged to be your pastor and to be among all of you as you surround each other in prayer, cry together, feed each other, and support one another. As difficult as the past few weeks have been for many at Grace, and this extends to the past few years even, what I have seen is a community of faith at it’s best. People who show up, who love abundantly, and who live lives of compassion and care. Thank you for your faithfulness to one another, to God and to living a life of love!

Shine Jesus’ Light
It’s VBS week and it feels different at Grace Lutheran. Largely because VBS is happening over at Lord of Life in Ramsey. We had planned this months ago when we thought our building would be under-construction at this time. Pastor Maria reached out to their Children’s Ministry Director, Elaine, who welcomed us with open arms. It’s been so fun to be sharing this experience together and recognizing the unity we have as Churches and Christians. We do not have to do our own thing, or be in competition, but instead be partners in sharing the Gospel.
The theme for the week is “Stellar: Shine Jesus’ Light”. All of our lessons remind us that when life is hard- perhaps because of literal darkness, or because we have broken relationships, or when we are grieving loss- that God is with us and God enters the darkness, the pain, the sorrow, in order to shine a light and allow us to know we are not alone.
Last year, Lord of Life reached out to us during the summer saying, we are praying for your church this week, what can we pray for? I shared about Pastor Maria being on medical leave, and other difficulties we had last summer, and they not only prayed for us, but Pastor David came and preached on a Wednesday evening when I was away. This year, when we reached out because we didn’t know what was ahead, Lord of Life invited us to join their VBS. I am thankful for this partnership and the ways I have experienced God’s light through the hospitality and care of Lord of Life. Indeed they are shining Jesus’ light for me.

A Friend Loves at all Times- Proverbs 17:17
My daughter Lily learned the bible ABCs in pre-school, and this was the verse for the letter f. F- friend- “a friend loves at all times.” Sandy Schmoll has been the Childcare Director at Seeds of Grace for 4 years now. Sandy lives out this proverb, holding it close to her heart; teaching and leading the families at Seeds of Grace how to be friends and how to love themselves, and everyone else. It is with an aching in my heart that I share the news that Sandy has submitted her resignation as the Director of Seeds of Grace. Sandy has been a member of Grace for 10 years. She and her husband Randy have led Catechism and our committed leaders to our community and especially the children at Grace. We have been blessed by the Schmoll family at large, and especially Sandy in her position at Seeds of Grace.
One of my first memories of Sandy is her coming in to my office and asking, “Is the daycare a ministry of this church or not?” It was in my first month at Grace. I didn’t really know if it was or was not. I had no past history and no clue on how the church and the daycare worked in relationship with one another. But Sandy and I have navigated this process together and have strengthened the relationship between the church and the daycare. I am so proud to say without question that Seeds of Grace is an essential ministry of Grace Lutheran Church. It is part of who we are. We have families who don’t attend church anywhere and claim us as their church family, and they know that at Grace they will be loved, cared for, nurtured in their life, and in their faith. It is because of Sandy’s commitment and faithfulness that this is true and that she has laid the groundwork for all of us to know of the essential ministry provided through Seeds of Grace.
Sandy and Randy are building a home on their land up north and plan to enjoy life at the lake in the last years of their working-life and moving into retirement. It has been a dream of theirs that they are excited to actualize. While, I am happy for them, I am deeply grieved in losing a great friend, an amazing Director and a leader at Grace. I am super grateful to Sandy for her ongoing commitment to Grace and Seeds of Grace. She will be staying on until we find a new director with a flexible schedule and has promised to train in the new director. The Seeds of Grace Board (that I am on) will be leading this search. If you know of someone who would be a good fit for our daycare, please pass on this job description and send them our way.
I hope that you will join me in praying for Sandy and Randy, Seeds of Grace during this time of transition, and for all of our families who are losing a beloved leader and teacher and who has helped us to be a friend that loves at all times.

God’s Winds of Change
If you were at 10:00am worship last week, you heard about my walk with Chandler during the children’s message. How I was struck that day by the wind blowing all the little seedlings throughout the world. That we are like God’s seeds blown out into the world to share God’s love. I came to this realization through our pentecost reading from Acts 2: 1-2 “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. “ I am struck by the blowing of God’s sometimes violent winds. Winds that push us to try new things and leap outside of our comfort zones and try something new. Winds of change that lead us and guide us in the new thing that God is doing. And the winds that cool and refresh on an especially hot Summer day!
This Sunday is Holy Trinity Sunday. Another church celebration day and a reminder to look for God all around. And in the spirit of the Pentecost wind, feel God blowing in our midst. We will say good-bye (kinda) to Kelsey Russell whose presence at Grace this past year was a needed aid for our children’s ministry programming. She said yes to a blowing wind, I would say, that pushed her to grow, try something new, and leap out of her comfort zone at times. Little did any of us know that the Friday before she would begin her supervisor (me) would have a stroke and need to be on medical leave. Kelsey took all this in stride and worked with Pastor Joanna and others on staff as well as our children’s ministry team to continue the spectacular commitment we have to our children and young families at Grace! It seems a new wind is blowing for Kelsey. And although she will remain a member at Grace she will be leaving her position on staff. I am so excited for her and I am sad to see her leave this position! Most of all I am glad she will still be around at Grace!
The wind continues to blow. Our Child, Youth, and Family (CYF) Department has seen a lot of change and transition over the past few years and God is guiding and leading us forward through these winds of change. We are so excited to share that Will Weikle will be our new Child, Youth and Family Director. Will is a lifetime member of Grace and was the best candidate for the position. His work managing 1st grade classrooms, musical gifts, relational heart, hunger to learn and grow, and his excitement for ministry make him the perfect candidate for this position! God’s spirit was definitely guiding all involved that lead to this decision for Grace. Please join me in welcoming Will and celebrating where God is leading us in our CYF department! Will will join us for Vacation Bible School at Lord of Life and will be officially onboarded to staff mid July! We plan to welcome him through an installation during worship this summer. This hiring decision is reflective of God’s provision, Grace’s stability and growth looking ahead to our future ministry here!
Many people at Grace have helped through this transition, Molly Schroeder, our interim CYF director, her expertise in this area made continuing meaningful programming for our youth and their families a cool and refreshing breeze! Kelsey’s leadership with Children’s ministry also helped us immensely, including her commitment to helping set us up for future success in her transition from the position. The Children’s Ministry Team and Youth Ministry team made of lay leaders, committed members of Grace who care deeply for faith formation of our children and youth. It was because of them we had such a great year! The CYF listening team and search and interview team also brought their expertise about Grace, Human Resources and their hearts to make this decision. I am so grateful for them for their availability, flexibility, and discernment throughout this process. Lastly, thank you to all of you at Grace who have prayed for us. We ask that you would continue to pray and wonder if God’s winds might be pushing you to get involved in this area of ministry at Grace?
I give thanks that God is at work among us! Offering a refreshing breeze, encouragement, and even a push from time to time as we live our lives of faith together!

Pentecost/Memorial Day a Clashing of Important Days
This Sunday is Pentecost, one of my favorite Holy Days in the church: a day when we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the Christian Church. And it is Memorial Day Weekend, a time when remember the lives lost in war and give thanks for the sacrifices made for freedom and peace of our country.
I feel a conflict in these two very important days falling together on weekend. Recognizing that in some way shape or form, worship will focus perhaps on one more than the other. I want to acknowledge that life is like this. That we often have to make choices about what we will focus on and where to put our energy.
Sometimes I wish life allowed us to focus in on that one important thing. Jesus even says this to Martha when she is complaining about Mary (her sister) sitting at the feet of Jesus while there is work to do. “Martha, Martha you are distracted and worried about many things, but there is only one thing.” (Luke 10:41). It is a good reminder to me that in the midst of many things that the one true thing is the love of God. No matter what, we have to make choices about where we put our focus, will we dare to slow down enough and see the importance of reflection on the way God is showing up in our lives, through the Holy Spirit and through the lives people have given in love for the sake of others.
I give thanks for all of this- for the invitation to focus on the love of God, for the gift of the Holy Spirit and for all that has been given for each of us.

Mother’s Day And All It’s Complexities
Dear Grace Friends,
We are quickly approaching Mother’s Day and I can feel my mind doing the mental gymnastics of this holiday. Now don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for my mother and for all the mothering figures in my life. I believe strongly that mothers should be celebrated. I also am thankful for mother’s around the world, those who have raised people I love and those who are strangers.
And even as I write these words, I feel conflicted because I want to add that we should celebrate ALL women not just those who have or have had children. Then I start to worry that I am taking away from what the day is about. I don’t want to diminish the celebration, but Mother’s Day is complicated. I think of all those years my dear friend Sarah didn’t go to church on Mother’s Day because she had buried her mother in high school and the day was too painful. I remember Alex, from my first congregation, who thanked me for praying for those who wanted more children but couldn’t have them because they had longed to have more than one child but couldn’t. And I think of all those mothers who are grieving children whose lives were cut short or who died before they lived outside the womb. I am now a part of the group that no longer has a mother to call on Mother’s Day and feel that pain as well.
As we approach Mother’s Day, I invite you to give thanks for the tender-loving gift of mothers and to also recognize the true complexity of the day. I hope you will join me in walking with compassion and care for all women this weekend, not knowing the journey they are on, or the ways this day might be felt or experienced. May we hold each other in love and grace.

So Much to Celebrate
Dear Grace Friends,
Last Sunday, I had the opportunity to preach at Nativity Lutheran in St. Anthony. I was invited to preach for their mental health weekend. I had agreed to this months ago, and then as the day drew near, wondered why I had said yes. The truth was I missed being with all of you. While it was fun to be in a new environment, I missed your faces, your energy, and hospitality.
As we enter the month of May and I prepare for our congregational meeting, there is so much to celebrate. Our worship on Sundays are filled with God’s presence, with people, with music, with opportunities to be both nourished and challenged in our faith. We have so many groups that meet on Sundays after worship and throughout the week who are dedicated to growing and building our outreach as well as our programming to strengthen the ministry God has called us to do at Grace. I am so grateful.
I have also spent (once again) too many hours on a slideshow in thanksgiving for our volunteers. As I have worked on this, my cup overflows because we have so many people who give of themselves, their time, their talents, their energy to making Grace live up to it’s name. All of our volunteers should be celebrated for countless hours (however, IPhoto could make the construction of a slideshow easier to manage and save the user (me) a headache).
I hope to see you this weekend. I hope you can join in the celebration. I hope you can join me in giving thanks to God for all God is doing through this community and so many of you.

Thanksgiving for Music
We are so blessed by the gifted musicians here at Grace. If you missed our Good Friday Worship, I would encourage you to listen to the music at the 7pm on YouTube. It was hauntingly beautiful. Thank you to our Music Director, David Phelps and the whole ensemble who shared their time and talents with us and to Mark Hedin and Frances Fernandez who narrated the Passion Narrative.
Our church is blessed by singers and musicians who share their passion and their gifts with us. I am especially appreciative to our brass band that played on Easter and on other celebratory occasions this year. What a gift! I am thankful for Joe Jackson and his leadership.
As you can see above, A.P. is stepping down from her position here as our organist. This is a loss for us here at Grace. I truly believe that God brought her to us, and united us in shared ministry. I know that she is looking forward to retirement and more travel. I want this for her too, and yet, we will miss her greatly. I hope that you will get a chance to say thank you to A.P. in the months to come and thank you to all of our musicians who allow us to celebrate our faith through music.

Mark Your Calendars: There’s A Lot Going On!
I hope you are going to join us on May 7th! Our staff got a little excited about all of the good things happening at Grace and we have packed this morning with all sorts of amazing things: music, High School Senior Recognition, Volunteer Appreciation, Holy Communion, and our Spring Congregational Meeting.
On top of all of that, we have 7 people who have agreed to run for Vision Board and only 3 spots (see below). I am super grateful for these leaders for willing to throw their name into the ring. What a blessing this is to have an abundance of willing leaders! My prayer is that they all find a place and a way to continue to grow in their leadership and relationship with God regardless of the outcome of the meeting.
Our congregational meeting will include a building project update, our Vision Board election and also a time of thanksgiving for our outgoing Vision Board members.
We are so grateful for the many and various ways people lead at Grace and for all of our volunteers who give so much in order to make a difference in our community and beyond!

A Full House, a Full Heart!
What a blessing it was to celebrate the most powerful story of all times with you all last weekend. Our sanctuary was full: full of music, full of fragrance from the flowers, full of love, full of welcome and full of people, and most importantly full of God’s presence! I am so grateful.
When Pastor Maria got sick last Friday, I had a feeling of calm even in the midst of disappointment. While we both would have loved to lead worship together and celebrate with all of you, circumstances were different. And yet, every where I turned people were offering to help. I had backup preachers lined up in case I got sick, backup presiders for Holy Communion and then every where I looked people popped up and said, “I’m here.” “Can I help?” Thankfully I had the presence of mind to say, “Yes!” because we are better together.
The Easter Gospel is a story that reminds us of the power of showing up. Showing up at the tomb, showing up in our grief, showing up along the unforeseen roads in life and the promise that comes in not walking alone. This past Sunday our house was full, which was amazing, you all showed up in abundant way! I am so grateful for the love that filled my heart! I pray that your heart was filled too! Thanks be to God!

Join in the Story!
This is the most dramatic week in the church year. From Thursday through Sunday, our church’s set will change three times – from typical Lenten adornment, to starkness and black, to hopeful white and bursting flowers. As a theater lover, I appreciate the theatrics of this week, and the invitation to move through the story of God’s great love for us.
It is helpful to remember that God’s love is in it all: in the betrayal of friends, in the quiet prayers we lift up to God in the middle of the night, in those moments of trial and turmoil, in the grief and sadness of loss, and in the hope of a new tomorrow.
I hope that you will join us this week as we experience together this great story of love from our God who feeds us, dies for us, and who will raise us up to new life.
I asked my 19 year old daughter, who is away at college, where will you be going to church this weekend. She is still considering… I have no expectations, just invitation. I hope that you will consider who in your life might be looking for an invitation to have someone to sit with at church, who might be longing to hear this story of love, could you invite them to join in the story?
I look forward to walking through this most Holy Week with all of you and anticipate celebrating our Risen Christ with you on Sunday!

Dear Grace Friends,
Our crew from Grace all made it back safely from Belize on Monday night/Tuesday morning. Going into this trip, I fully expected to spend my time working on the medical clinic which was our central focus and plan. However, once I arrived in the village of Georgetown, the need that was unmet was someone to be in a classroom. I set over to the school a couple of blocks away and arrived in a classroom without a teacher. The principal who was going to teach the class had been called into a meeting with leaders from the school and before I knew it I was teaching fractions to 5th and 6th graders. I spent two days teaching school to these young people and it was wild, unplanned and also truly fulfilling.
I love to teach classes, but I seldom teach more than an hour. I’m not trained for that! I teach First Communion, Bible, Bible Studies and more, but usually with adults or with students with a limited time frame and definitely a plan. Nevertheless, I was thankful for the opportunity. I have always had a deep respect for teachers and now my respect is renewed. I can’t tell you how many times I had wished my sister was in the classroom with me. She actually is a 5th grade teacher. However, last night when our First Communion Class ended up with 20 people in the youth room, I felt more prepared than ever for the curve balls thrown my way. We’ve got this- adapt, teach, connect, create. Together our families talked about meals, and setting the table and the gift of food given to all so there is enough.
What I experienced in Belize is that there was enough- enough work, enough joy, enough teachers, if we were willing to open ourselves up and not be stuck in our expectations. I wonder how often we do that? Stay open? And yet this is what God calls us to do: be open so that together we might experience the presence of God.

Dear Grace Friends,
In our scripture from this past weekend (Matthew 22:1-14), the King makes all the necessary preparations for a wedding banquet only to discover that even the best laid plans do not always meet our expectations. Those invited not only didn’t show up but acted poorly. As a result, the king was disappointed and had to revamp his plans. I imagine there was grief and loss for the king, and then a moment when suddenly the vision of what to do now- got bigger- better perhaps. “I am not only going to invite some people in but all.” The king didn’t give up when things didn’t go his way but tried again and kept going.
These feelings of planning, unmet expectations and needing to revamp are analogous to our building project. For two years we have been praying and discerning, listening and planning and attempting to make decisions within our budget that meet the needs of Grace and our community. We have cast a vision of welcome, connection and care that fits and have stepped out in faith. In some ways it feels like we planned a party, sent out invitations and were thrilled with the people who said I will come along. I am so grateful to all of you who have made commitments and looked forward to meeting with us….
In the last few weeks, we have received disappointing news regarding our building project. When our team met with our construction manager at risk and our architect last week, we were informed that the bids that came in were over a million dollars over budget, even after we had already made cuts. To say we are disappointed would be an under-statement. The best laid plans have not met our expectations. There are several factors that have led to this: increase in interest rates, increased cost of materials and labor, a construction market that is busy, and a slow supply chain. None of which could have been calculated.
Now, we are faced with big decisions of how to best move forward, do we cut things? do we wait for a future date? Do we take a higher mortgage? These are questions we are wrestling with as a team. Our team has been hard at work and prayerful in our decision making and stewardship of our resources, and we have also recognized that it is time to call a family meeting. We want to be transparent about what is ahead. The truth is we don’t know entirely. We are still figuring out bids even though we are supposed to break ground in a month. Our timeline is already delayed, and we have also received word that we most likely will have to include asbestos abatement even though we don’t know the full cost of this yet. Our project will continue into 2024 and we will need to make more cuts that we do not want to make. And yet, even as we face these hard realities, we are mindful of the Gospel message. We have a God who shows up at times of disappointment, grief, and loss, and reminds us that this is not the end. Our God will widen the scope of invitations to send out so that the banquet will continue. Our God declares that when we meet the impossible that nothing is impossible with God.
We knew that this campaign would be one of transformation- this is what we have stated from the beginning that we will be transforming inside and out. I know my inward transformation is happening. It is hard some days, and I can see God’s presence inviting me to continue to live in faith. I will continue to give toward our transforming campaign trusting that God will do amazing things. While the outward transformation is not done yet, and has experienced some hiccups, I still believe in this campaign, in our shared vision of removing obstacles, and creating a church that is accepting and safe for all. Our vision, our values, our faith has not changed. I hope you will join me in praying for our campaign, our project and the path forward. I hope that you will continue to trust, invest, and give of yourself, your time and your financial gifts to support our vision here at Grace trusting in a God who will raise the dead and open doors we never anticipated were even there.

Snowstorms and Ashes
The weather in Minnesota is unpredictable especially in late February, early March, which is what we experienced this week once again. It is no longer surprising when bad weather impacts important church/worship days. On the one hand, I find God’s sense of humor a bit annoying, “cut us a break!” On the other hand, I am reminded that many of our traditions are human-made traditions. There is no Gospel text where Jesus says, you must get ashes on your forehead on the first of the 40 days to do Lent right. And yet, this practice has meaning for us. It evokes memories for many, and for others, it is a reminder of God’s faithfulness and claim on our life. The reality is, while I would have preferred to worship with more people at the end of Ash Wednesday, and marked more foreheads with the ashes cross with the declaration to “remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” This is true for us whether or not we received the ashes or not. Regardless, we are invited to remember: our identity as God’s beloved, our mortality, and the faithfulness of God who says in the wilderness, in the snowstorms, on the hard days, in the suffering and in the pain, you are marked by me and my love. Sitting Together in the Dark
Today as I prayed, I remembered sitting with my mom in the dark last February. While we had potential to let the light in, something I am inclined to do, my mom couldn’t bear to have the curtains open. And even though, I tried to just be within ear shot of her bedroom to do yoga or work, the reality was my mom didn’t want me that far away. She wanted me with her in the dark. And so that is where I sat. We took turns actually, my sister, dad and I, sitting in the dark with mom. She didn’t want much, just our presence, just to know we were there.
I think this is true for me too. It is comforting to have my dog nuzzle her head at me in the dark, or to hear Jeff breathing beside me when I can’t sleep. But really, I know my desire for someone to be with me in the dark goes beyond the literal darkness, but the darkness of grief, the darkness of depression and anxiety, and the darkness of tragedy in the world.
This is what God does for us. Sits with us in the dark. Through it all, God’s presence doesn’t just bring light, but it brings comfort, peace and promise in those moments of darkness and pain. On the one hand, the days are growing longer and the nights shorter, but starting one week from today, we will be gathering for worship for Ash Wednesday and then Lent. We will be lighting candles and saying prayers, and singing about light that comes in the darkness, and we will be doing something more than that, we will be sitting together in the dark.
I hope you all know that if you are struggling or hurting, or lonely, that we at Grace are here for you. Our Circle of Grace team is setting up visits to people, working on providing food and more, and we on the staff are here to visit and pray as well. However, we don’t know if you are currently sitting in the dark, but if you are, please know God is with you, and also reach out, because you don’t need to sit alone.

Slide Shows, Year-end Reflections
I made the commitment to make a slide show for our Variety Show and Annual Meeting next week. It seemed like an easy thing to do especially since almost all of the Variety Show has been planned and executed by Pastor Maria and David Phelps, our music director. However, I spent all day working on it yesterday and it’s still not done. Every time I make a change, the order and titles get messed up. Every time I think I have everything in there, I realize I don’t have this group or that. Pastor Maria gave me advice that I often give her, it’s never going to be perfect, eventually it has to be good enough.
The thing is, I know this is true. So I apologize in advance for the pictures I don’t have or groups I missed. At this point I am making choices for my sanity. And, looking at the pictures I realize that last year at Grace was far better than good enough. There is such beauty in the work that this community of faith did in God’s name last year. Looking at all of the pictures and even recalling the pictures that I have seen but don’t have- God has been at work. From our Transforming Inside and Out Campaign, to the connections formed through our small groups like the Chosen, Women’s Retreats, Quilters, OK at Play, music ministry, within Children, Youth and Family there is so many good things. I am beyond grateful for the ways God led us last year, showing up day after day, in both the beauty and laughter and the tears. I am thankful for the ways God worked in you and I am thankful I am almost done with this slideshow and the belief it will be good enough.

The Promise of God’s Baptismal Waters
It was a fun Sunday back. We had three baptisms at our 10:30am worship, we celebrated baptism of our Lord and had a baptism reunion with some of the families who had a member baptized at Grace in the past year. My day was filled with adorable children and babies. We had the opportunity to remember as well, God’s declaration to us all that we are God’s beloved, claimed in the waters of baptism and marked with the cross of Christ now and forever. For those of us not baptized we were reminded that we are still made in the image of God and invited to the waters.
Next week, we will remember three people who have died in the faith recently. Kathy and Jason Beekman, whose funerals will be on Thursday January 19th at 11am and Shirley Jacobson whose funeral will be on Monday, January 16th at 11am. It is a different opportunity to remember and rejoice in the significance of baptism. The traditional LBW liturgy for a funeral service begins with a thanksgiving for baptism, reminding us that in baptism we were baptized into Christ’s death and because of this we too will be united with Christ in the resurrection. This is the promise we cling to at these moments of heartache and grief. Our God has claimed us. As Isaiah states: “when you walk through the waters I will be with you. God is with us in the waters of baptism, in the difficult waters of life, in our dying and in our rising. We can rejoice and give thanks in the moments of welcoming new people into our community of faith through baptism, and the promise that holds us as we commend our loved ones into the arms of our merciful Savior”.
Wherever you are in life right now, I pray that God’s lifegiving, and promise-filled waters will continue to nourish you in life, and in faith.

New Year, New Every Morning!
Happy New Year! It is hard to imagine we are in 2023! Tuesday in our weekly staff meeting, we reflected on 2022. What a year it was! Medical Crises for Pastor Maria and the Fernandez family, Pastor Joanna’s travel to be with family while her mom was dying, our Transforming Inside and Out Campaign. It seems like we have been planning and preparing for this building project for years but it hasn’t even been one year since our campaign began officially! 2022 was a big year of transition and growth for so many of us. And I am sure as each of you remember what your last year has been you could add to our list of things both good and not so good, challenging and less so. All in all, we have been through so much together in the last year.
The Bible includes many stories that invite us as the people of God to remember. Remember the promise God made to Noah and Abraham. Remember how God delivered us from the hands of slavery Egypt into the promised land. Even at the last supper, Jesus reminds his disciples as often as you eat of this bread and drink of this cup, do this in remembrance of me. God reminds us to remember where we have been and also calls us forth reminding us that God is always doing a new thing! While reflecting on our past year as a staff, we also remembered the beginning of the Gospel of Mark and Matthew where each reminds us of the Good News: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Another word for repent is change. How uncomfortable change can be and yet change is our only constant. From our first steps to kindergarten to first grade and so on and so forth we must adapt and change as the world around us changes! God the creator of the universe is in, under, and throughout all of that change! When I look forward to all that God has in store for us this year, I pray that there are changes, changes that bring us closer together, changes that help us to grow, changes that fulfill our mission and values that together we might accept others, care compassionately, deepen connections, and share God’s love! Sometimes these changes will make us uncomfortable, we may have more questions than answers, but I pray through it all we might be able to proclaim together the Kingdom of God is HERE! Lamentations reminds us: “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; God’s mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!” Remember who you are, whose you are, and all God has delivered you from. Change as God’s word and God’s world change you, in order that we all might experience God’s grace -new every morning!
