The Narrative Lectionary has taken us through the stories of the Old Testament, the expectant longings of the prophets, the birth of Christ, Jesus’ life and death, and the formation of the early Church.
Each season has its own style of writing, and as this program year comes to a close, we shift styles take a 6 week look at Psalms. The Book of Psalms offer a distinct style and focus that differs from the writing we’ve encountered so far – they might best be described as ‘Songs’. They have been
composed with a particular linguistic style and rhythm. Like many modern day popular songs (religious and secular), these ‘songs’ paint pictures for the hearer/reader. In this case they provide us with pictures displaying the perspective of an ancient people, who individually and collectively seek to know God, understand his ways, and determine the requirements for his people. There is a wide range of emotion here, and this series loosely follows the flow that in life we move through a pattern of ups and downs:
• Orientation: When life is stable and the world seems trustworthy (Psalms 1and 113), to
• Disorientation: When the bottom drops out and the tradition feels like a lie (Psalm 69), to
• Reorientation: When faith in a trustworthy God and creation are found again, but the experience of disorientation is not forgotten (Psalms 27, 40 and 146)
Come join us on the journey!
