At the heart of our 2014 The Broken Journey is God’s great love for the world shown in the sacrifice of Jesus. He walked the path of suffering, as he was broken and poured out for the sins of the world. During Lent, we marvel at what lengths God will go in order to redeem and save his broken creation. This great gift of love is something we cannot ever begin to understand…we simply wonder and give thanks for such love!
The Broken Journey of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (March 5th) as we gather in worship for a time of repentance and honest self-examination. As a visible sign of our contrition and confession, ashes are marked on our foreheads as we hear: “Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Ash Wednesday is a somber moment. It is a difficult time. We are reminded of the cost of the love God gave us in Jesus.
Our journey of brokenness continues in our weekend worship services as we focus upon significant stops along the way. Jesus comes into Jerusalem, confronts the religious and political powers of the land, experiences betrayal at the hands of his most-trusted followers, suffers unjustly at the hands of his enemies, and finally dies on the cross.
As we journey on the way of Jesus’ brokenness, we will gather on Wednesday evenings in darkness for worship. Once again we will use the beautiful Holden Village Vespers Liturgy to set a quiet and reflective mood as we contemplate the meaning of Jesus’ Broken Journey to the cross through a video series based on the beautiful words of Romans 8:1,“Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
